Is your community ready to benefit from climate migration? We can help.
As climate-driven natural disasters intensify, more than 4.1 million Americans have been displaced over the past five years. Many are beginning to seek out safer, more climate-resilient regions, and communities across the country, from the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, to the Mid-Atlantic and New England, are becoming top destinations for those displaced by climate disasters.

Why your community can thrive as a Climate Destination
Communities in more climate resilient regions across the United States, such as the Great Lakes, Upper Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and New England offer what climate migrants are looking for: safety from coastal and wildfire risks, abundant water, affordable housing, and a strong economy. However, preparation is key to fully benefit.
Act now to take advantage of climate in-migration
By acting now, your community could benefit from, among other things:
- Economic Growth: New residents bring new business opportunities and economic stimulus.
- Revitalized Communities: Younger families and skilled professionals help support schools, businesses, and neighborhoods.
- Stronger Workforce: New talent strengthens the local labor pool.
- Boosted Housing Market: Greater demand leads to increased property values and stability.
- Larger Customer Base: More residents mean more demand for local goods and services.

The Risks of Inaction

Without proactive planning, your community could miss out on these opportunities and face, among other things:
- Housing Shortages: A sudden influx could overwhelm your housing market, driving up prices.
- Strained Infrastructure: Public services, schools, utilities, and transportation networks could be pushed to their limits.
- Financial Instability: Public budgets and housing affordability could come under pressure, impacting both current and future residents.

Global Best Practices. Local Implementation.
Resilient Future Consulting’s Joe Lampe is involved in ground breaking climate resilience and adaptation work around the world. Currently, he serves as a Subject Matter Expert in support of the European Union’s Pathways2Resilience program. Launched in 2023 to support the EU’s Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, this first-of-its-kind program seeks to support regions across the EU develop transformative pathways to climate resilience. Its seeks to kick start the resilience planning process and arm regions with the tools and skills they need to tackle an uncertain and unstable future in the face of continued climate risks.
Joe integrates his experience from past climate resilience and policy projects in the US, and knowledge gained through the Pathways2Resilience program, into his work supporting communities prepare for climate risks and future population growth cause by climate-induced relocation. Whether it be building the capacity of local municipalities and staff to plan for and response to disasters, to developing implementable and fiscally-linked resilience preparation projects, Resilient Future Consulting brings international best practices and experience to support communities across the US.
Joe also writes for publications across the US, with a particular focus on the Rust Belt and his home region of Western Pennsylvania. His work explores how climate change is shaping migration patterns and what that means for city planning and urban development policy. In a recent article for PublicSource, he looked at how cities like Pittsburgh can draw lessons from places such as Duluth, Minnesota, which are proactively preparing for an influx of climate migrants. The piece emphasizes the need for long-term thinking, coordinated governance, and inclusive strategies to help communities adapt and thrive in a changing climate.
